A Bit About Me
Jonathan F. Cohen is the managing partner in the law firm of Plosia Cohen LLC. He is a dual graduate of Boston University Schools of Law and Public Health. Since joining a prestigious management-side labor boutique law firm after completing a clerkship at Essex County Superior Court, he has successfully represented clients statewide before all New Jersey State and Federal courts and many administrative agencies.
An accomplished appellate advocate, Cohen prevailed in the New Jersey Supreme Court case which established that government employers could institute furloughs without negotiation in the 2009 economic crisis. Borough of Keyport v. IUOE, 222 N.J. 314 (2015). Most recently, Cohen defeated Gannett d/b/a Asbury Park Press in a reported Appellate Division case concerning public record requests which saved his municipal client from having to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees to the corporate media requestor. Gannett v. Township of Neptune, 467 N.J. Super. 385 (App. Div. 2021).
Based on these successes, since 2014, he has been an annual recipient of the “Rising Star” designation in the New Jersey Monthly “Super Lawyer” Edition, until 2022 when he first received the "Super Lawyer" designation. Cohen regularly speaks and publishes articles regarding cutting edge labor and employment issues, including in New Jersey Business Magazine, New Jersey State Bar Association Labor & Employment Quarterly and the firm’s Client Alerts. Mr. Cohen is also a Contributing Editor to the Sixth Edition of The Developing Labor Law (and each Supplement since 2008), which is published by Bloomberg-BNA and the American Bar Association and is recognized as the seminal treatise on federal labor law.
He serves on several professional boards and committees, including as Chapter President Emeritus of the New Jersey Labor Employment Relations Association (NJLERA). When not practicing law, Cohen serves on voluntary charity boards and spends time with his wife and young children. Jonathan, a frequent lecturer, was honored to receive the 2023 Outstanding Faculty Award from the National Business Institute ("NBI").
